Abstract  Abstract

Wireless terminals receive beacon signals from other communication devices and make transmission decisions based on priority information communicated by the beacon signals. The priority information communicated in the beacon signal includes, for example, one of device priority, user priority, and session priority. The wireless terminal compares its own current priority level with priority information recovered from the received beacon signals. The transmission decision based on the received priority information includes determining not to transmit the user data if the received priority information indicates a higher priority than its own priority level. Another transmission decision based on the received priority information includes determining to transmit user data if the received priority information indicates a lower priority than its own priority level. Another example transmission decision, performed as a function of priority information from beacon signals, includes determining to perform transmission power level adjustment and determining to end the ongoing communication session.
