PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for establishing communications between mobile communication devices with differing capabilities in an ad hoc network.

SOLUTION: First and second devices do not support the same protocols and thus do not have the ability to form direct communication links with each other but support communication protocols used to communicate device capability information. A third device supports multiple protocols in addition to a communication protocol used to communicate device capability information and can operate as a communication mediator. The third device receives (7006) capability information about the first and second devices and forms a communication link with each of them (7015 7016). Once the communication links are established the first and second devices can communicate (7020) via the third communications device. The ability to discover other devices and their capabilities facilitates the creation of an ad hoc network.
