Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus are described for establishing communication between devices, eg, mobile communication devices in ad hoc networks of differing performance. A device capable of supporting multiple protocols in addition to the protocol used to communicate device performance information, for example, does not have the capability of directly forming a communication link between other devices because it does not support the same protocol. Form a communication link having a first wireless communication device and a second wireless communication device. Once the link is established, the first wireless communication device and the second wireless communication device can communicate via the third wireless communication device. In some embodiments, each of the first wireless communication device, the second wireless communication device, and the third wireless communication device support a first communication protocol that is suitable for communicating device performance information but not suitable for exchanging user data. The ability to find other devices and their capabilities facilitates the construction of an ad hoc network.
