Abstract  Abstract

A transmitter generates and sends a low rate signal to its expected receiver. Upon receiving the low rate signal, the expected receiver generates and sends a channel probe response (CSR), wherein said CSR is a short burst having a predetermined transmission format and carrying predetermined information. The transmitter then analyzes CSR and determines uplink channel response, estimates downlink channel response, and determines appropriate transmission parameter settings based on the analysis and downlink response estimate. Adjustment of the transmission parameters can be done either in the MAC or PHY layer or a combination of both. After adjusting its transmission parameters and modulation of subcarriers with user data according to the particular transmission settings, the transmitter transmits the user data on the receiver in a preferred portion of the bandwidth. In a preferred embodiment, the transmitter will also generate and transmit a transmission format control (TFC) signal containing the particular transmission parameter settings, including subcarrier modulation information, to the receiver.
