Abstract  Abstract

The transmitter generates a low speed signal and transmits it to the target receiver. Upon receiving the low speed signal, the target receiver generates and transmits a channel sounding response (CSR). The CSR is a short burst having a predetermined transmission format and carrying predetermined information. The transmitter then analyzes the CSR to determine the uplink channel response, estimates the downlink channel response, and determines the appropriate transmission parameter settings based on the analysis and downlink response estimation. The adjustment of the transmission parameters can be performed in the MAC layer, the PHY layer, or a combination thereof. After adjusting the transmission parameters and modulating the user data into subcarriers according to the determined transmission settings, the transmitter transmits the user data to the receiver with a suitable bandwidth portion. In a preferred embodiment, the transmitter further generates a transmission format control (TFC) signal that includes the determined transmission parameter settings including subcarrier modulation information and transmits the signal to the receiver.
