Abstract  Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for implementing spatial frequency block coding (SFBC) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless communication system. The present invention is applicable in both closed and open loop modes. In closed loop mode, power loading and native beamforming are performed based on channel state information (CSI). Channel coded data streams are multiplexed into two or more data streams. Power loading is performed based on the CSI for each of the multiplexed data streams. FBC encoding is performed on the data streams for each of the paired subcarriers. Eigen-beamforming is then performed based on the CSI to distribute the eigenbeam to multiple transmit antennas. Power loading may be performed in two or more SFBC encoding blocks or in each unique mode. In addition, power loading may be performed across subcarriers or subcarrier groups in a weak native mode.
