Reporting terminal capabilities to support short message service. Method of providing short message service (SMS) message to an interconnected working wireless local area network (UE) user equipment begins by registering the UE with an lntemet Protocol (IP-) short message portal SM-GW). Compatibility report is sent from UE to IP-SM-GW, where capability report includes UE capabilities. SMS message is transmitted from Short Message Service Center (SMSC) to IP-SM-GW. UE capabilities are evaluated on IP-SM-GW to determine if the UE can receive the SMS message and the SMS message is delivered to the UE via IP-SM-GW if the UE has message receiving capabilities SMS
