Abstract
Method and apparatus are disclosed for optimizing Random Access Channel (RACH) transmissions from wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) for multiple transmissions. A WTRU may initiate uplink transmission for a random access procedure using a configured time resource such that the uplink resources may be time shared by a plurality of WTRUs. The transmission time may be calculated on an absolute or relative basis. A backoff time may be applied before starting the uplink transmission. The backoff time may be WTRU-specific, WTRU group-specific, specified per access class and may be determined based on a priority basis. A scaling factor may be applied to the backoff time. A contention free allocation method may be used to determine the appropriate resource. The data may be transmitted with and without a preamble. The WTRUs may include machine type communication devices and may be grouped in accordance with a number of factors or characteristics.

Claim
1. A method for performing Random Access Channel (RACH) transmissions from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising:
determining access class (AC) information associated with the WTRU, wherein the AC information provides uplink access characteristics; receiving a paging message containing an access barring factor in a system information block (SIB), wherein the accessing barring factor contains information regarding access control of the uplink resource; determining whether to access the network based on the AC information and the access barring factor; and transmitting an uplink transmission over a shared resource.
2. The method of claim 1, further comprising releasing the shared resource in response to completing the uplink transmission.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the access barring factor is used to block the WTRU from transmitting an uplink transmission over the shared resource.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the shared resource is segregated between machine-type communication (MTC) WTRUs and non-MTC WTRUs.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein the supports Machine Type Communication (MTC).
6. A wireless transmit/receive unit comprising:
a processor configured to determine access class (AC) information associated with the WTRU, wherein the AC information provides uplink access characteristics; a receiver configured to receive a paging message containing an access barring factor in a system information block (SIB), wherein the accessing barring factor contains information regarding access control of the uplink resource; the processor is further configured to determine whether to access the network based on the AC information and the access barring factor; and a transmitter configured to transmit an uplink transmission over a shared resource.
7. The WTRU of claim 6 wherein the processor is further configured to release the shared resource in response to completing the uplink transmission.
8. The WTRU of claim 6 wherein the access barring factor is used to block the WTRU from transmitting an uplink transmission over the shared resource.
9. The WTRU of claim 6 wherein the shared resource is segregated between machine-type communication (MTC) WTRUs and non-MTC WTRUs
10. The WTRU of claim 6 wherein the supports Machine Type Communication (MTC).
11. A Node-B comprising:
a processor configured to determine access class (AC) information associated with a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), wherein the AC information provides uplink access characteristics; a transmitter configured to transmit a paging message containing an access barring factor in a system information block (SIB) to the WTRU, wherein the accessing barring factor contains information regarding access control of the uplink resource, wherein the AC information and the access barring factor determines whether the WTRU attempts to send an uplink transmission to the Node-B; and a receiver configured to receive an uplink transmission over a shared resource.
12. The Node-B of claim 11 wherein the access barring factor is used to block the WTRU from sending an uplink transmission over the shared resource.
