Abstract  Abstract

PURPOSE: A data processing apparatus and method are provided to allow a symbol interleaver and a symbol deinterleaver to change generator polynomials and permutation order to enable switching among 2K, 4K and 8K modes. CONSTITUTION: A data processing apparatus includes an interleaver memory. The interleaver memory reads-in a predetermined number of data symbols to be mapped on OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) carrier signals and reads-out data symbols for the OFDM carrier signals. Read-out is carried out in an order different from the order of read-in, and the orders are determined from an address set using the effect of interleaving the data symbols on the carrier signals. The address set is determined by an address generator. One address is generated for each input symbol to indicate one of the carrier signals, to which a data symbol is mapped.
