Abstract  Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for paging a WTRU in a CELL_PCH and URA_PCH states.

SOLUTION: The method is implemented through the SRNS relocation. A WTRU performs cell re-selection from a Release 6 cell to a Release 7 cell (202). The WTRU then sends a URA UPDATE message including an indication of the WTRU enhanced PCH capability to a DRNC via an RACH (204). The DRNC recognizes the capability mismatch in the WTRU and an SRNC (206). The DRNC sends a relocation request message to the core network over the Iu interface to initiate an SRNS relocation procedure (208). The core network the SRNC and the DRNC perform SRNS relocation (210). Once the SRNS relocation is complete the new SRNC which was previously the DRNC creates and transfers a Release 7 URA UPDATE CONFIRM message to the WTRU over an HS-DSCH (212).
