The invention claims a method and apparatus for paging a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) in a CELL-PCH and URA-PCH state. WTRU sends the CELL-PCH and URA-PCH state receives high speed downlink share channel (HS-DSCH) with strengthened type paging channel (PCH) capability of indication the indication such as the cell update message URA update message or UTRAN mobility information confirm message. the drift radio network controller (DRNC) received from the serving RNC whether the WTRU has an enhanced PCH type capability indication and page the WTRU according to the indication. if it does not know the WTRU capability the RNC over both an HS-DSCH and a PCH/secondary secondary common control physical channel (S-CCPCH) is the paging WTRU. the WTRU monitoring HS-DSCH and PCH/S-CCPCH. the WTRU based on the capability of the SRNC or configuration from the network on the configure reception over an HS-DSCH.

A drift radio network controller (DRNC) may receive an indication whether the WTRU has an enhanced PCH capability from a serving RNC and page the WTRU based on the indication. An RNC may page the WTRU over both an HS-DSCH and a PCH/secondary common control physical channel (S-CCPCH) if a WTRU capability is not known. The WTRU may monitor both an HS-DSCH and a PCH/S-CCPCH. The WTRU may configure reception over an HS-DSCH based on the capability of the SRNC or configuration from the network.
