A method for initiating a discontinuous reception operation, DRX, by a user equipment (110), UE, operating in a wireless communications network (104), whose method comprises: controlling (402) applications running on the equipment user UE (110) to identify at least one inactivity initiator event associated with at least one of the applications; determine (406), by the UE user equipment (110), the initiation of the DRX operation on the basis of the identified inactivity initiator event and device feature information associated with the UE user equipment; and communicating (410) by the user equipment UE (110) to an improved node B (102), eNodeB, the initiation of the DRX operation before the user equipment UE (110) switches to the DRX operation; and characterized in that the communication with the eNodeB node (102) comprises the transmission of at least one radio frame that includes a radio resource control message, RRC, including the RRC message at least one DRX parameter in relation to the DRX operation initiation.
