Abstract
A wireless terminal can communicate with two radio access networks (RAN) ( 304 306) of different types. The wireless terminal can register simultaneously with a RAN of the first type and a RAN of the second type and can wirelessly connect to a RAN of either the first type or the second type in a connected state. The wireless terminal when registered with both a first RAN and a second RAN and when wirelessly connected to the first RAN in the connected state receives a mobility signal via the first RAN indicating a RAN of the second type and in response to receiving the mobility signal and in response to being so registered with the first RAN and second RAN transmits an access trigger signal (417). The access trigger signal indicates that the wireless terminal is to be connected to the second RAN in the connected state.

when the wireless terminal is wirelessly connected to a first RAN (Radio Access Network), receive a mobility signal via the first RAN, the mobility signal indicating a second RAN;
after receiving the mobility signal, transmit a routing area update or a tracking area update for receipt by the second RAN, the routing area update or the tracking area update indicating that the wireless terminal is to be connected to the second RAN; and
when the wireless terminal is in an idle mode signaling reduction (ISR) mode, deactivate the idle mode signaling reduction mode before transmitting the routing area update or the tracking area update,
wherein the wireless terminal is configured to be registered with both the first RAN and the second RAN.
2. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more processors is configured to transmit the routing area update or the tracking area update in response to a routing area (RA) remaining unchanged while changing wireless connection of the wireless terminal from the first RAN to the second RAN.
3. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more processors is configured to transmit the routing area update or the tracking area update in response to the mobility signal indicating that the wireless terminal is to remain registered to the second RAN via a radio access cell of the second RAN, and the wireless terminal being already registered to the second RAN.
4. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more processors is configured to transmit the routing area update or the tracking area update in response to the wireless terminal having, stored in the wireless terminal, no pending uplink data which is to be transmitted by the wireless terminal.
5. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more processors is configured to transmit the routing area update or the tracking area update in response to the wireless terminal having, stored in the wireless terminal, no pending request, received by the wireless terminal, for data to be transmitted by the wireless terminal.
6. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more processors is further configured to, prior to transmitting the routing area update or the tracking area update, de-register the wireless terminal from the second RAN.
7. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first RAN is an evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN),
wherein the second RAN is a UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) or GSM/EDGE radio access network (GERAN),
wherein the wireless terminal is registered with the first RAN via a mobility management entity (MME) node of the first RAN,
wherein the wireless terminal is registered with the second RAN via a serving gateway support node (SGSN) of the second RAN, and
wherein the mobility signal indicates a cell change order (CCO).
8. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more processors is further configured to deactivate the idle mode signaling reduction mode in response to the indicated second RAN indicated by the received mobility signal.
9. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more processors is further configured to deactivate the idle mode signaling reduction mode by setting a temporary identity number (TIN) associated with the wireless terminal to a globally unique temporary user equipment identity (GUTI).
10. The wireless terminal of the claim 1, wherein the one or more processors is further configured to de-register the wireless terminal from the second RAN by deactivating the idle mode signaling reduction mode by setting a TIN (Temporary Identity used in Next update).
11. The wireless terminal as claimed in claim 3, wherein the one or more processors is configured to transmit the routing area update or the tracking area update in response to the wireless terminal having, stored in the wireless terminal, no pending uplink data which is to be transmitted by the wireless terminal.
