Abstract  Abstract

A content distribution and reception method and apparatus are disclosed. A quality function for the content object may be sent to the intermediate cache proxy server and / or receiver (s). The quality function provides a functional relationship between at least two quality metrics for the content object such that the perceptible quality of the content object at the receiver can be estimated based on the quality function. The quality function can be expressed as a polynomial series and / or a set of mean and standard deviation values. The quality function may be a media description description (MPD) for dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) streaming or a session description protocol (SDP) message or a real time control protocol (RTCP) transmitter report for RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) .
