Abstract  Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control connectivity to a network for intermittent data services.

SOLUTION: A new dormant mode 330 is defined such that a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may transit from a connected state 320 or an idle state 310 to the dormant mode 330 on the basis of triggering conditions. The WTRU transits from the connected state 320 or the idle state 310 to the dormant mode 330 if the characteristic or the priority of the data matches a characteristic or a priority for the dormant mode 330 and operates using configuration which is different from configuration used for the connected state 320 or the idle state 310. The WTRU in the dormant mode 330 performs a WTRU-controlled mobility procedure and maintains a dedicated resource such as a cell radio network temporary identity (C-RNTI) for receiving a unicast traffic from the network.
