Abstract
A method and apparatus for establishing peer-to-peer communication in a wireless network is described. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may receive configuration information comprising periodic resources comprising time and subcarrier resources from a base station of a wireless network. The time and subcarrier resources may be used in discovery of other WTRUs. The WTRU is further configured to transmit an identification in the allocated resources and to transmit a synchronization signal to a peer WTRU for timing synchronization of the peer WTRU.

Claim
1. A method implemented in a Wireless Transmit Receive Unit (WTRU) for node discovery for peer-to-peer communication, the method comprising:
transmitting a timing signal; and receiving, in response to the timing signal, a handshake seeking signal from a another WTRU.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the timing signal is a primary advanced preamble.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the timing signal is a secondary advanced preamble.
4. The method as in claim 1 wherein the timing signal is transmitted periodically.
5. The method as in claim 4 wherein the timing signal provides own timing information.
6. The method as in claim 1 wherein the WTRU transmits the timing signal in accordance with an instruction from a network.
7. The method as in claim 1 wherein the WTRU relays the timing signal received from another WTRU.
8. The method as in 1 further comprising:
estimating a path loss to the second subscriber station; and
reporting the estimated path loss to a network.
9. The method of claim 8 wherein the path loss is estimated based on the handshake seeking signal.
10. The method as in claim 1 wherein the timing signal identifies the WTRU.
11. The method as in claim 10 further comprising:
transmitting access information.
12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:
receiving a random access channel (RACH) transmission from the other WTRU.
13. The method of claim 12 further comprising:
transmitting resource allocation to the other WTRU.
14. The method of claim 13 further comprising:
receiving a transmission from the other WTRU including identities of the WTRU and the other WTRU.
15. The method as in claim 1 wherein the WTRU increases a transmit power of the timing signal on a condition that no other subscriber station successfully receives the timing signal.
16. A method implemented in a first Wireless Transmit Receive Unit (WTRU) for node discovery for peer-to-peer communication, the method comprising:
receiving a timing signal from a second WTRU. transmitting a handshake seeking signal to the second WTRU in response to the timing signal.
17. The method of claim 16 wherein the timing signal is a primary advanced preamble.
18. The method of claim 16 wherein the timing signal is a secondary advanced preamble.
19. The method of claim 16 wherein the timing signal provides its own timing information.
20. The method of claim 16 further comprising:
relaying the timing signal to a third WTRU.
