A representative-based group channel access method for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is disclosed. A representative-based group channel access method groups M2M devices with common characteristics, assigns a single representative or multiple representatives from the group according to any criteria, and uses the assignments assigned to channel access. This method avoids unnecessary peer-to-peer communication between M2M devices, reduces the possibility of collisions on the channel during initial channel access, and reduces control signal overhead. The representative-based group channel access method also backs off by adjusting the number of slots to ensure that all M2M devices in the group are in tune with the representative.
