Abstract  Abstract

A representative-based group channel access method for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is disclosed. Representative-based group channel access methods group M2M devices having common features, assign a single representative or multiple representatives from a group according to any criteria, and use assigned delegates for channel access. This method avoids unnecessary peer-to-peer communication between M2M devices, reduces the likelihood of collisions on the channel during initial channel access, and reduces control signal overhead. The delegate-based group channel access method also backs off by adjusting the number of slots so that all M2M devices in the group keep pace with the delegate.
