Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for supporting a random access channel (RACH) is disclosed. Each of the plurality of wireless transmit / receive units (WTRUs) transmits a random access request to the base station on the uplink RACH preamble. The RACH response (access indication channel, AICJH, message) sent by the base station is received by each WTRU. The received RACH response signal includes a control part (physical downlink control channel, PDCCH) and a data part (physical downlink shared channel, PDSCH). The control signal portion of the RACH response indicates the location of the RACH response message portion. The RACH response control portion includes a plurality of control channel elements (CCEs), and each WTRU is assigned a respective CCE to provide its own RACH response control signal. The WTRU is configured to locate its intended CCE among the plurality of CCEs transmitted by the base station.
