Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for supporting random access using a random access channel (RACH) is disclosed. Each of the plurality of the wireless transmission / reception units (WTRU) sends a random access request to a base station in a RACH preamble with uplink. A RACH Response, sent by the base station, is received by each WTRU. A portion of the RACH Response control signal indicates the location of the RACH Response message portion. The RACH Response control signal comprises multiple control channel elements (CCE), where each WTRU is assigned a respective CCE to provide its unique RACH Response control signal, the WTRU is configured to locate its projected CCE from among the multiple CCEs sent by the base station.
