Abstract  Abstract

A method and system for switching RAT between wireless communication systems that implement different radio access technologies (RATs) in conjunction with a multi-mode WTRU and are connected to each other is disclosed. A plurality of wireless communication systems with overlapping coverage areas are arranged. Here, each system implements a different RAT and is configured such that a service provided by one system can be provided through another system. Each wireless communication system sends an indication of the presence of a coordinated communication system in the coverage area of each system. The WTRU receives this indication and information about the interworking wireless communication system. The WTRU then uses the received information to initiate a handoff to the companion wireless communication system. Thus, the WTRU continues to receive the same service through the interworking wireless communication system as the service received from the wireless communication system to which it is currently connected.
