Abstract  Abstract

The transmitting entity transmits a “base” pilot to each protocol data unit (PDU). The receiving entity can derive a sufficiently accurate channel response estimate of the MIMO channel using the base pilot under nominal (or most) channel conditions. The transmitting entity selectively transmits additional pilots based on channel conditions and / or other factors as needed. Additional pilots may be inserted in the PDU to accommodate almost any symbol period. The receiving entity can derive an improved channel response estimate using additional pilots. The transmitting entity transmits signaling to indicate that additional pilots are being transmitted. This signaling may be embedded in pilot symbols transmitted in a set of pilot subbands used for carrier pilots transmitted over most of the PDU. The signaling indicates whether further pilots are being transmitted and possibly other relevant information is being transmitted.
