Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for achieving transmit diversity for a legacy single antenna receiving device. A multi-antenna transmitting entity can: (1) a steered mode that directs data transmission in the direction of a single antenna receiving entity or a multi-antenna receiving entity; or (2) an effective channel observed by data transmission in the entire subband. Is transmitted to the single-antenna receiving entity or the multi-antenna receiving entity using a pseudo-random transmit steering (PRTS) mode. The PRTS mode can be used to achieve transmit diversity or spatial spreading. To obtain transmit diversity, the transmitting entity uses a different pseudo-random steering vector for the entire subband and uses the same steering vector for the entire packet for each subband. The receiving entity need not know the pseudo-random steering vector and need not perform any spatial processing. For spatial spreading, the transmitting entity uses a different pseudo-random steering vector for the entire subband and a different steering vector for the entire packet for each subband. Only the transmitting entity and the receiving entity know the steering vector used for data transmission. (Selection) Figure 5
