Abstract  Abstract

A method for selecting transmission modes for use in the transmission of data in a plurality of parallel channels in a wireless communication system, comprising: obtaining (312) a channel estimate for each of the parallel channels; compute, for each of the parallel channels, an operational signal-to-noise ratio, SNR, based on the channel estimate for the respective parallel channel and an offset value of the SNR for that parallel channel, in which the offset of the SNR indicates a reduction amount for use in computing the operational signal-to-noise ratio, SNR, selecting a data rate, an encoding scheme, an interleaving scheme and / or a modulation scheme, for each respective parallel channel, based at least in part on the respective operational SNR; and adjust the offset value of the SNR, for at least one of the parallel channels, based on the estimated quality of the data transmissions received on the respective parallel channel.
