Abstract  Abstract

A mobile terminal (103) for requesting resources for transmitting data on uplink within a mobile communication system, and a network entity (102) for allocating uplink resources to the mobile terminal, are disclosed. To provide a flexible scheduling scheme for uplink transmission, scheduling procedures are based on a request grant scheme. The resource request (601) of the mobile terminal is provided via a contention-based channel, while all further communication (603, 604, 606) uses scheduled resources. A reference signal (604) is repeatedly transmitted from the mobile terming to the network entity upon receipt of a resource allocation message in response to the resource request.
