Abstract
Notifying served user equipments (UEs) of the presence or absence of cell-specific reference signal (CRS) symbols transmitted by neighboring base stations in the physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) region of a subframe can be achieved through various of signaling techniques. The served UE may be notified by communicating a one or multi-bit indicator in a physical layer signaling channel of the serving cell such as the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) of the subframe. Alternatively the served UE may be notified through higher layer signaling.

Claim
1. A method comprising:
transmitting, by a first network controller, at least one indicator to a served user equipment (UE), wherein the at least one indicator specifies a cell-specific reference signal (CRS) port count associated with CRS symbols transmitted by a second network controller, a CRS frequency shift of the CRS symbols transmitted by the second network controller, and whether a subframe carrying the CRS symbols transmitted by the second network controller is a Multicast-Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) subframe,
wherein a combination of the CRS frequency shift, the CRS port count, and whether the subframe carrying the CRS symbols is an MBSFN subframe signal to the served UE which resources elements (REs) of the subframe carry the CRS symbols transmitted by the second network controller, the REs carrying the CRS symbols being in one or both of a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) region of the subframe and a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) region of the subframe, and wherein the first network controller is different than the second network controller.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting the at least one indicator includes transmitting the at least one indicator in a physical layer signaling channel of a serving cell.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein the at least one indicator includes a one-bit indicator, and wherein transmitting the at least one indicator includes transmitting the one bit indicator in the physical layer signaling channel of the serving cell.
4. The method of claim 2, wherein the at least one indicator includes a multi-bit indicator, and wherein transmitting the at least one indicator includes transmitting the multi-bit indicator in the physical layer signaling channel of the serving cell.
5. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting the at least one indicator includes transmitting the at least one indicator via higher layer signaling.
6. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting the at least one indicator includes transmitting the at least one indicator via a combination of physical layer signaling and higher layer signaling.
7. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one indicator includes a bitmap.
8. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one indicator includes a field value.
9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:
mapping, by the first network controller, PDSCH symbols into the subframe in accordance with a presence or absence of CRS symbols transmitted by the second network controller in the PDSCH region of the subframe, wherein the PDSCH symbols correspond to a data transmission destined for the served UE.
10. A first network controller comprising:
