Abstract
Notifying served user equipments (UEs) of the presence or absence of cell-specific reference signal (CRS) symbols transmitted by neighboring base stations in the physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) region of a subframe can be achieved through various of signaling techniques. The served UE may be notified by communicating a one or multi-bit indicator in a physical layer signaling channel of the serving cell, such as the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) of the subframe. Alternatively, the served UE may be notified through higher layer signaling.

Claim
1. A method for operating a first network controller, the method comprising:
transmitting, by the first network controller, an indicator to a served user equipment (UE), wherein the indicator specifies whether cell-specific reference signal (CRS) symbols transmitted by a second network controller are present in a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) region of a subframe.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the indicator specifies that the CRS symbols of the second network controller are excluded from the PDSCH region of the subframe when the subframe is a Multicast-Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) subframe.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein the CRS symbols of the second network controller are present in a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) region of the subframe when the subframe is an MBSFN subframe.
4. The method of claim 1, wherein the CRS symbols of the second network controller are included in the PDSCH region of the subframe when the subframe is a normal subframe.
5. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting the indicator includes transmitting the indicator in a physical layer signaling channel of a serving cell.
6. The method of claim 5, wherein the indicator includes a one-bit indicator, and wherein transmitting the indicator includes transmitting the one bit indicator in the physical layer signaling channel of the serving cell.
7. The method of claim 5, wherein the indicator includes a multi-bit indicator, and wherein transmitting the indicator includes transmitting the multi-bit indicator in the physical layer signaling channel of the serving cell.
8. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting the indicator includes transmitting the indicator via higher layer signaling.
9. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting the indicator includes transmitting the indicator via a combination of physical layer signaling and higher layer signaling.
10. The method of claim 1, wherein the indicator specifies a number of CRS antenna ports associated with the subframe.
11. The method of claim 10, wherein the indicator specifies one or more CRS antenna ports when the subframe is a normal subframe, and
wherein the indicator specifies zero CRS antenna ports when the subframe is an Multicast-Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) subframe.
12. The method of claim 1, wherein the indicator includes a bitmap.
13. The method of claim 1, wherein the indicator includes a field value.
14. The method of claim 1 further comprising:
mapping, by the first network controller, PDSCH symbols into the subframe in accordance with a presence or absence of CRS symbols transmitted by the second network controller in the PDSCH region of the subframe, wherein the PDSCH symbols correspond to a data transmission destined for the UE.
15. A first network controller comprising:
a processor; and a computer readable storage medium storing programming for execution by the processor, the programming including instructions to:
send an indicator to a user equipment (UE), wherein the indicator specifies whether cell-specific reference signal (CRS) symbols transmitted by a second network controller are included in a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) region of a subframe.
16. A method for operating a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:
receiving, by the UE, an indicator from a first network controller, wherein the indicator specifies whether cell-specific reference signal (CRS) symbols transmitted by a second network controller are included in a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) region of a subframe.
17. The method of claim 16, wherein the indicator specifies that the CRS symbols of the second network controller are excluded from the PDSCH region of the subframe when the subframe is a Multicast-Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) subframe.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the method further comprises:
receiving a subframe carrying a data destined for the UE, wherein the data is transmitted in accordance with a coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission technique such that the data is transmitted by both the first network controller and the second network controller.
20. The method of claim 16 further comprising:
receiving the subframe;
determining that the CRS symbols of the second network controller are present in the PDSCH region of the subframe in accordance with the indicator;
mitigating interference in the PDSCH region of the subframe attributable to the CRS symbols of the second network controller; and
demodulating serving data carried in the PDSCH region of the subframe.
