Abstract
A method and apparatus for handover between a 3GPP-based network and a non-3GPP network when a policy update to a new gateway is required. Confirmation of the policy update is sent from the policy and accounting rule function (PCRF) to the 3GPP packet data network gateway (PDN GW). The new gateway also verifies policy updates to the 3GPP serving gateway. Tunnel endpoints and radio resources are released between the PDN GW and the evolved packet data gateway (ePDG) thereby releasing resources previously used by the WTRU. The release acknowledgment is sent from the serving gateway to the PCRF to confirm that the policy update process is complete. The method may be used for handover between a 3GPP network and a non-3GPP network or vice versa. The method and apparatus may be implemented via the S2b or S2c interface.
