Abstract  Abstract

Local breakout is provided by one or more nodes (eg, a local access point and / or a local gateway) in the wireless network to facilitate access to one or more local services. With regard to local breakout, multiple IP point of presences (POPs) associated with different service levels may be provided for an access point. For example, one POP may be associated with a local service and another POP may be associated with a core network service. An IP POP can be identified for the wireless packet to indicate an end point for the wireless packet. In addition, different mobility management functions may be provided to different nodes of the system, whereby mobility management for a given node may be provided by different nodes for different types of traffic. Thus, the access terminal can support multiple NAS instances. In addition, different types of paging may be provided for different types of traffic. In addition, messages associated with one protocol may be carried over another protocol to reduce the complexity of the system.
