Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for adjusting a channel quality indicator (CQI) feedback period to increase uplink capacity in a wireless communication system is disclosed. Uplink capacity is increased by reducing uplink interference caused by CQI transmission. The wireless transmit / receive unit (WTRU) monitors the downlink transmission status to the WTRU and sets a CQI feedback period based on the downlink transmission status to the WTRU. The base station monitors uplink and downlink transmission demands. The base station determines a CQI feedback period of at least one WTRU based on the uplink and downlink transmission demands, and sends a command to the WTRU to change the CQI feedback period of the WTRU.
