Method and apparatus for adjusting the period of backfeed of channel quality indicator to increase the capacity of the upper link. Method and apparatus are described for adjusting backfeed period of channel quality indicator (CQI) to increase the capacity of the wireless communication system. The capacity of the upper link is increased by means of reducing the top link interference caused by CQI transmissions. Unit for transmitting and receiving without wire (WTRU) monitors the situation of bottom link transmissions to the WTRU and establishes the backfeed period of the CQI based on the situation of the transmission link to the lower WTRU. Base station monitors the transmission needs of the upper link and the lower link. The base station determines the backfeed period of CQI of at least one of WTRU transmission based on the needs of the upper link and the lower Link and sends command to the WTRU to change the period of CQI of backfeed WTRU.
