Abstract  Abstract

In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, a transmitter and / or receiver communicates separate data streams over non-orthogonal spatial channels. Each spatial channel uses the same set of OFDM subcarriers and allows multi-path characteristics in the spatial channel to communicate additional data without increasing the frequency bandwidth. Spatial-frequency subcarrier modulation assignments are dynamically assigned on a spatial channel basis and on a subcarrier basis to maximize the data transmission capability of the channel. In some embodiments, each spatial channel is associated with one of a plurality of spatial diversity antennas. In other embodiments, beamforming is performed to allow transmission and / or reception of signals within the spatial channel.
