Abstract  Abstract

METHOD FOR ALLOWING ORTOGONAL AND NON-ORTOGONAL MULTI-USER CODE CHANNEL INTEROPERABILITY. Technique for allowing a first group and a second group of users to share access to a communication channel, such as a radio channel. A first user group is typically a user inheritance group such as those who use CDMA mobile phone equipment. The second user group is a group of data users who encode their transmissions in different formats optimized for data functionality. The first group of users share a modulation structure such as, in a reverse link, using single phase shifts of common pseudo-random noise (PN) code. The second user group shares another modulation structure but in a consistent manner and compatible with the users of the first group. Specifically, users in the second group can all use the same PN code and code phase shift. However, they are uniquely identified by designating, for example, each with a unique orthogonal code.
