The present invention provides an uplink channel retention method used in a mobile communications system supporting an unlicensed carrier as well as a base station and a user equipment that perform the method. The method comprises: detecting whether an unlicensed carrier resource is available; and sending a channel retention signal on the detected available unlicensed carrier resource. According to embodiments of the present invention it is ensured that an unlicensed carrier resource remains available during the period from the time when the unlicensed carrier is detected to be available to the time when an uplink grant is issued and comes into effect.
