Abstract
A codebook C is provided in a MIMO transmitter as well as a MIMO receiver. The codebook C will include M codewords ci, where i is a unique codeword index for each codeword ci. Each codeword defines weighting factors to apply to the MIMO signals, and may correspond to channel matrices or vectors to apply to the MIMO signals prior to transmission from the respective antennas of the MIMO transmitter. The present invention creates codeword subsets Si for each codeword ci of the codebook C. Each codeword subset Si defines L codewords cj, which are selected from all the codewords ci in the codebook C. The codewords cj in a codeword subset Si are the L codewords in the entire codebook that best correlate with the corresponding codeword ci.

Claim
1. (canceled)
2. A method for providing feedback from a wireless receiver, the method comprising, at the wireless receiver:
identifying a first channel condition; selecting a first subset of codewords based on the first channel condition; transmitting a first subset index representing a codeword from the first subset of codewords to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitter; identifying a second channel condition; selecting a second subset of codewords based on the second channel condition; and transmitting a second subset index representing a codeword from the second subset of codewords to the OFDM transmitter.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first subset index corresponds to a set of weighting factors to be applied to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) signals by the OFDM transmitter.
4. The method of claim 2, further comprising,
transmitting to the OFDM transmitter a first codebook index, wherein the first subset is selected based on the first codebook index.
5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:
transmitting, for each of N consecutive feedback instances associated with a first mode of operation, subsequent to transmitting the first codebook index, feedback comprising a respective subset index from the first subset of codewords.
6. The method of claim 2, further comprising:
receiving a transmission from the OFDM transmitter based on the first subset index.
7. The method of claim 2, wherein transmitting the first subset index comprises selecting the codeword from the first subset of codewords, based on a third channel condition, subsequent to the first channel condition.
8. The method of claim 2, wherein the second subset of codewords is the same as the first subset of codewords.
9. An apparatus for providing wireless communications feedback, the apparatus comprising:
transmit circuitry; a memory storing software instructions; and one or more processors communicatively coupled to the transmit circuitry and the memory, the one or more processors configured to execute the software instructions, wherein, in executing the software instructions, the one or more processors cause the apparatus to:
identify a first channel condition;
select a first subset of codewords based on the first channel condition;
transmit a first subset index representing a codeword from the first subset of codewords to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitter;
identify a second channel condition;
select a second subset of codewords based on the second channel condition; and
transmit a second subset index representing a codeword from the second subset of codewords to the OFDM transmitter.
10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the first subset index corresponds to a set of weighting factors to be applied to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) signals by the OFDM transmitter.
11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the one or more processors further cause the apparatus to:
transmit to the OFDM transmitter a first codebook index, wherein the first subset is selected based on the first codebook index.
12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the one or more processors further cause the apparatus to:
transmit, for each of N consecutive feedback instances associated with a first mode of operation, subsequent to transmitting the first codebook index, feedback comprising a respective subset index from the first subset of codewords.
13. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising:
receive circuitry communicatively coupled to the one or more processors; wherein the one or more processors further cause the apparatus to:
receive a transmission from the OFDM transmitter based on the first subset index.
14. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein transmitting the first subset index comprises selecting the codeword from the first subset of codewords, based on a third channel condition, subsequent to the first channel condition.
15. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the second subset of codewords is the same as the first subset of codewords.
16. A non-transitory computer readable memory medium storing program instructions executable by a processor to:
identify a first channel condition; select a first subset of codewords based on the first channel condition; transmit a first subset index representing a codeword from the first subset of codewords to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitter; identify a second channel condition; select a second subset of codewords based on the second channel condition; and transmit a second subset index representing a codeword from the second subset of codewords to the OFDM transmitter.
17. The non-transitory computer readable memory medium of claim 16, wherein the first subset index corresponds to a set of weighting factors to be applied to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) signals by the OFDM transmitter.
18. The non-transitory computer readable memory medium of claim 16, wherein the program instructions are further executable by the processor to:
transmit to the OFDM transmitter a first codebook index, wherein the first subset is selected based on the first codebook index.
19. The non-transitory computer readable memory medium of claim 15, wherein the program instructions are further executable by the processor to:
transmit, for each of N consecutive feedback instances associated with a first mode of operation, subsequent to transmitting the first codebook index, feedback comprising a respective subset index from the first subset of codewords.
20. The non-transitory computer readable memory medium of claim 19, wherein transmitting the first subset index comprises selecting the codeword from the first subset of codewords, based on a third channel condition, subsequent to the first channel condition.
21. The non-transitory computer readable memory medium of claim 20, wherein the second subset of codewords is the same as the first subset of codewords.
