Abstract
A method and an apparatus for utilizing multiple carriers are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) capable of receiving on a single downlink carrier at a time may tune the receiver to one downlink carrier and switch the downlink carrier in accordance with a configured pattern. The WTRU may switch the carrier from an anchor carrier to a non-anchor carrier at a high speed shared control channel (HS-SCCH) sub-frame boundary and switches back at an end of a subsequent high speed physical downlink shared channel (HS-PDSCH) subframe. The WTRU may switch the carrier at an HS-PDSCH sub-frame boundary. A WTRU capable of receiving on multiple downlink carriers simultaneously may tune the receiver to an anchor carrier and a supplementary carrier and switch the supplementary carrier to another carrier based on a carrier switching order. The carrier switching order may be received via an HS-SCCH or via layer 2 signaling.

Claim
A method, implemented in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), for utilizing multiple carriers, the method comprising:
receiving an indication via a control channel to receive data on a second downlink carrier; determining to receive the data on the second downlink carrier in response to the received indication; and receiving the data on the second downlink carrier.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the indication is received on a first downlink carrier, and wherein the control channel is a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) of the first downlink carrier.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein the indication is received via downlink control information (DCI) of the PDCCH, wherein the indication is one or more additional bits of the PDCCH that indicate the second downlink carrier for receiving the data, and wherein the indication comprises an explicit indication of a carrier number of the second downlink carrier.
4. The method of claim 1, wherein the data is received on a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) of the second downlink carrier, and wherein the second downlink carrier comprises a control channel.
5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first downlink carrier is an anchor carrier and the second downlink carrier is a non-anchor carrier.
6. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for utilizing multiple carriers, the WTRU comprising:
a processor configured to: receive an indication via a control channel to receive data on a second downlink carrier; determine to receive the data on the second downlink carrier in response to the received indication; and receive the data on the second downlink carrier.
7. The WTRU of claim 6, wherein the indication is received on a first downlink carrier, and wherein the control channel is a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) of the first downlink carrier.
8. The WTRU of claim 7, wherein the indication is received via a downlink control information (DCI) format of the PDCCH, wherein the indication is one or more additional bits of the PDCCH that indicate the second downlink carrier for receiving the data, and wherein the indication comprises an explicit indication of a carrier number of the second downlink carrier.
9. The WTRU of claim 6, wherein the processor is configured to receive the data on a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) of the second downlink carrier, and wherein the second downlink carrier comprises a control channel.
10. The WTRU of claim 6, wherein the first downlink carrier is an anchor carrier and the second downlink carrier is a non-anchor carrier.
11. A method, implemented in a network element, for utilizing multiple carriers, the method comprising:
sending an indication to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) via a control channel, wherein the indication indicates that the WTRU is to receive data on a second downlink carrier; and sending the data on the second downlink carrier in accordance with the indication.
12. The method of claim 11, wherein the indication is sent on a first downlink carrier, and wherein the control channel is a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) of the first downlink carrier.
13. The method of claim 12, wherein the indication is sent via downlink control information (DCI) of the PDCCH, wherein the indication is one or more additional bits of the PDCCH that indicate the second downlink carrier for receiving the data to the WTRU, and wherein the indication comprises an explicit indication of a carrier number of the second downlink carrier.
14. The method of claim 11, wherein the data is sent via a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) of the second downlink carrier, and wherein the second downlink carrier comprises a control channel.
15. The method of claim 11, wherein the first downlink carrier is an anchor carrier and the second downlink carrier is a non-anchor carrier, wherein the network element is a Node B.
16. A network element for utilizing multiple carriers, the network element comprising:
a processor configured to: send an indication to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) via a control channel, wherein the indication indicates that the WTRU is to receive data on a second downlink carrier; and send the data on the second downlink carrier in accordance with the indication.
17. The network element of claim 16, wherein the indication is sent on a first downlink carrier, and wherein the control channel is a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) of the first downlink carrier.
18. The network element of claim 17, wherein the indication is sent via a downlink control information (DCI) format of the PDCCH, wherein the indication is one or more additional bits of the PDCCH that indicate the second downlink carrier for receiving the data to the WTRU, and wherein the indication comprises an explicit indication of a carrier number of the second downlink carrier.
19. The network element of claim 16, wherein the processor is configured to send the data via a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) of the second downlink carrier, and wherein the second downlink carrier comprises a control channel.
20. The network element of claim 16, wherein the first downlink carrier is an anchor carrier and the second downlink carrier is a non-anchor carrier, and wherein the network element is a Node B.
