Abstract  Abstract

The method and apparatus may be used to select a power saving mechanism in a wireless transmit / receive unit (WTRU). For example, the WTRU may support at least a power save mode (PSM) and / or an extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) mode. The WTRU may send a request message containing parameters associated with the supported power saving mechanism, e.g., the active time of the PSM and the preferred DRX value of the eDRX mode. The WTRU may receive an accept message including at least one selected parameter indicating a power saving mechanism of the WTRU selected by the network (NW). The WTRU may activate the selected power saving mechanism and may initiate a validity timer that defines the duration of use of the selected power saving mechanism. In another embodiment, a WTRU configured to use eDRX may receive a paging signal for system information (SI) change during an extended broadcast control channel (BCCH) modification period.
