Abstract  Abstract

The International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) advanced technology, also known as the fourth generation (4G), aims to support bandwidths up to 100 MHz. LTE currently supports a single carrier bandwidth of up to 20 MHz. The present application describes a multi-carrier approach, in which some embodiments of the present invention provide a simple solution to aggregate multiple single carrier bandwidths to achieve wider bandwidth (> 20 MHz). This approach extends LTE (Long Term Evolution) bandwidth far beyond that provided by a single carrier, but it can maintain full backward compatibility with technologies that are ahead of 4G technology and use smaller single carrier bandwidths. More generally, embodiments of the present invention may be applied to other communication standards as well as LTE.
