Abstract  Abstract

An Efficient Enhanced Transport Format Combining (E-TFC) selection method and apparatus supports Flexible Radio Link Control (RLC) Packet Data Unit (PDU) size and Medium Access Control (MAC) There is provided a method of populating a MAC-e Packet Data Unit (PDU) enhanced with data from a logical channel as part of an E-TFC selection. In one embodiment, the E-TFC selection algorithm employs a single request from the MAC layer to the RLC layer to request the number of bits allowed to send for the logical channel to generate an enhanced MAC-e PDU. In another embodiment, the MAC entity performs a number of requests to the RLC entity. In yet another embodiment, the MAC entity makes a single request to the RLC entity to generate one or more enhanced MAC-e PDUs of a predetermined size. Techniques for maintaining guaranteed bit rate (GBR) for unscheduled data flows with variable length headers are also provided.
