Abstract  Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for efficiently detecting contention while reducing signaling overhead in a random access procedure of a mobile communication system. The network node transmits a contention resolution (CR) message only when it receives an initial access message, and does not transmit a CR message when it receives a message that includes a valid C-RNTI of the terminal rather than the initial access message. The terminal starts the timer when the terminal successfully transmits the L2 / L3 message. When the terminal has information such as C-RNTI, scrambling code, control information signaled for the terminal through a downlink control channel is detected during operation of the timer or a unique ID or L2 / L3 message of the terminal When the CR message including the random ID transmitted through is received, the timer is stopped and the procedure is performed. On the other hand, if either of the two is not detected / received and the timer expires, the random access procedure is restarted.
