Abstract  Abstract

The present invention provides a method of operating a base station transmitter. The method includes providing a cellular downlink synchronization signal having a first and a second portion, wherein the first portion uses a corresponding one of a plurality of different first signals assigned to adjacent transmission cells. do. The method also includes providing additional cell-specific information to the second portion and transmitting a cellular downlink synchronization signal. In one embodiment, the first portion explicitly indicates partial cell identification information and the remaining cell identification information is carried in the second portion. In another embodiment, the plurality of different first signals is simply used to avoid the channel mismatch effect. The present invention also provides a method of operating user equipment. The method includes receiving a cellular downlink synchronization signal having a first and a second portion, wherein timing acquisition is performed in conjunction with first synchronization sequence index detection via the first portion. The second portion also provides cell-specific parameters, and the method further includes identifying and extracting the second portion.
