Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide a method and apparatus for linear precoding in a full-dimensional MIMO (FD-MIMO) system. According to an aspect, the eNB compresses a larger number of antenna elements into a smaller number of antenna ports. The eNB uses a port precoding matrix to send a reference signal to the UE, receive feedback on CSI based on the reference signal, and map multiple data layers and antenna ports to physical antenna elements. Based on this, data is transmitted to the UE.
