Abstract  Abstract

Systems and methods for providing timing synchronization in a wireless communication system are disclosed. Uplink timing synchronization may be provided via specific messages transmitted from the user equipment to the network access device or may be calculated based on data received at the network access equipment from the user equipment. The method includes receiving an uplink timing reference signal transmission command message, determining a time interval for transmitting a timing reference signal transmission according to the timing reference signal transmission command message, and transmitting uplink data at the time interval. Evaluating whether to be done and, if there is data to be transmitted, transmitting the data at the time interval, in which case the timing reference signal transmission is not transmitted at the time interval. Otherwise, transmitting the timing reference signal transmission at the time interval.
