Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus showing a temporary block flow (TBF) in which a piggyback acknowledgment / negative acknowledgment (PAN) field is addressed. A PAN check sequence (PCS) is created using, for example, cyclic redundancy check (CRC) coding. The PCS is masked with a temporary flow identification (TFI) assigned to the TBF, or a mask generated based on the TFI. The data block containing the PAN field and the masked PCS is then processed for transmission. A mask can be generated by converting the TFI using an (M, N) code, where M is not greater than the number of bits in the PCS and N is the number of bits in the TFI. In this scheme, the TFI can be transmitted in the PAN field without using explicit bits to identify the TBF.
