Abstract
A method and apparatus for implementing handoff between radio access networks (RANs) (110a) deployed under different radio access technologies (RATs) is disclosed. The wireless transmit / receive unit (WTRU) (150) comprises at least two wireless units to support RAT. Each RAN sends a list of RANs collocated in the RANs coverage area to the WTRU. The WTRU stores the list and determines if the handoff criteria are met by one of the collocated RANs. The WTRU then initiates a handoff from the current RAN to the target RAN (110a) if the handoff criteria are met by the target RAN. Alternatively, the WTRU may send a measurement report to the current RAN so that the current RAN determines whether the handoff criteria are met by a selected one of the collocated RANs, and the handoff criteria is Initiates a handoff to the selected RAN if satisfied.
