Abstract  Abstract

A method and system for reducing decoding complexity in a communication system. According to the present invention, information to be transmitted is provided to a systematic portion of a plurality of transmission buffers and encoded by an external decoder communicatively connected to the transmission buffers. The resulting redundant bits are provided to the parity portion of each transmit buffer. The contents of this transmit buffer are multiplexed and further encoded by an internal decoder to improve protection with additional redundancy. The receiving station recovers this transmitted information by performing the reverse process. Since the decoding complexity depends on the size of the systematic part of the transmission buffer, the decoding complexity can be reduced by a reasonable compromise between the size of the systematic part and the transmission buffer.
