Abstract  Abstract

(57) (Summary) An encoding device for adjusting a signal rate in a cordless communication system. The apparatus includes an encoding circuit that converts a digital input into an encoded output having a greater number of bits than the input, and an interleave that combines the words of the encoded output to generate a data block having a plurality of interleaved words. A puncturing circuit or a repetition circuit for puncturing or repeatedly processing bits from the data block. The puncturing or repetition circuit uses a deletion or repetition pattern to generate data words for transmission in each frame of the transmission channel. The deletion or repetition pattern is selected based on the characteristics of the encoding circuit and the interleaving circuit.
