A method for determining position information in a communication system for mobile telecommunications intended to operate in accordance with the specifications of Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS), whose system comprises at least one access network, at least one control node (MSC , SGSN) intended for the processing of position service requests, and at least one interface for at least one external entity EE (UE) that uses position information, and in which the following operations are performed by the control node: send a LOCATION REPORTING CONTROL message to at least one radio frequency network (RNC) controller of the access network; and receive a LOCATION_REPORT message that includes position information; characterized in that the LOCATION REPORTING CONTROL message comprises a request type information element to indicate the type of position request; the LOCATION_REPORT message additionally comprises the request type information element; a value of the request type information element received in the LOCATION REPORT message is analyzed; and a receiver is determined from the position information sent in the LOCATIONREPORT message based on the result of the analysis.
