Abstract  Abstract

The invention relates to a method for preparing and performing a handover of a mobile node which is located in a non-3GPP network or a 3GPP network. The invention teaches to change the Serving-Gateway in the 3GPP network before performing the handover thereby accelerating the later handover. When a handover of the mobile node gets likely the location of the mobile node is determined and subsequently an appropriate new Serving-Gateway is selected in the 3GPP network. The data path is changed to go via the new Serving-Gateway. Data packets can also be forwarded between the old and the new Serving Gateway so as to not interrupt the data flow. During the handover of the mobile node the Serving-Gateway has not to be changed anymore since an appropriate Serving-Gateway has already been established.
