Abstract  Abstract

Methods and apparatus for enabling the short message service (SMS) and supplementary services (SS) in a long-term evolutionary network (LTE) are described, by means of the mobility management (EMM) of the evolved packet system (EPS) ), by the control plane of the LTE. In one embodiment, the radio resource control (RRC) connection radio signaling (SRB) carrier is used for the transport of SMS and SS, via the LTE control plane, between a wireless unit of transmission / reception (WTRU) and a mobility management entity (MME). EMM interfaces and primitives are defined for actions towards SMS and SS entities, in order to enable SMS and SS services in the LTE, by means of the LTE control plane. Message formats for transporting SMS and SS messages are also described, in order to send SMS and SS messages within transport messages without access to stratum (NAS) by uplink (UL) and NAS transport messages by downlink (DL) of the EMM.
